The man that was leading the latest attempt to try and form a new regional government in the Brussels-Capital Region Yvan Verougstraete (Francophone centrist) has thrown in the towel. More than 19 months since the election in June 2024, Brussels is still without a new regional coalition government.
Latest attempt form for a new regional government in Brussels fails, “Formateur” Verougstraete quits
Mr Verougstraete took his decision to quit after a meeting with representatives of 6 political parties that lasted just over an hour. The Francophone Centrist leader points the finger of guilt at the Flemish Liberal Party Anders (formally Open VLD) that refused to attend the multi-party talks.
Mr Verougstraete told journalists that the Flemish liberal Budget Minister in the outgoing regional government Dirk De Smedt is now in a very isolated position.
Yves Verougstraete had wanted to form a centre-left coalition made up of the Francophone socialists, greens, centrists and federalists and the Flemish greens, socialists and Christian democrats. However, this would not have had a majority among the Dutch-speaking parties.
The Flemish Christian democrats said recently that they wish to remain in the opposition and the Flemish liberals have refused to take part in the talks. On Monday the Budget Minister in the outgoing regional government Dirk De Smedt reaffirmed his party’s refusal to attend the coalition talks.
