Photos of farmers driving their tractors into Paris this morning and arriving at the Arc de Triomphe have been flashed across the globe. Belgian farmers too are demonstrating against the EU’s agreement with the Mercosur nations of South America that form the Southern Common Market.
Farmers plan filter blockades across Flanders in co-ordinated protest with French colleagues
French farmers’ organisations want to draw attention to the problems in the agricultural sector. Farmers have now been protesting for weeks now. One of their grievances, shared by Flemish farmers, is their opposition to the free trade agreement between the European Union and the Mercosur countries of South America.
Protests are not limited to France
Later today, a farmers' protest is also planned in Belgium. Farmers' Union ABS will also set up tractor filter blockades to stem traffic flows at busy traffic junctions in various provinces across Flanders. From 11 a.m. onwards, the roundabout in Wommelgem, one of the busiest traffic junctions in the Antwerp region, will be blocked. Actions are also planned in Ghent, more specifically at the turbo roundabout near the Euro-Silo.
In French-speaking Belgium, the Walloon Federation of Young Farmers (FJA) will tonight and tomorrow also block several strategic traffic points with tractors, the organisation announced earlier.
