The Belgian Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Maxime Prévot (Francophone Centrist) has met with the US Secretary of State Marco Rubio for talks on key global issues.
Belgian Foreign Minister and US Secretary of State meet to discuss Venezuela and Gaza
The US State Department reports that the meeting covered the situation in Venezuela, the current state of the Gaza peace talks and cooperation in tackling international drug trafficking.
Writing on the social media platform X, Mr Prévot said “Meeting my esteemed colleague Marco Rubio at such a pivotal moment for the world was an excellent opportunity for a substantive exchange between partners.”
“We addressed key international issues, such as Greenland, Venezuela, Ukraine, the DRC and the Middle East. And as friends and allies do, we did it in an open and frank manner. Differences exist, but so do strong convergences and shared responsibilities. As allies, we remain committed to advancing common priorities and working together on the challenges ahead”.
The meeting follows comments made last weekend by Mr Prévot about the US operation in Venezuela. After the US that led to the capture and removal of president Nicolas Maduro, Prévot said “Venezuelans deserve a democratic and legitimate regime”. He also warned that international law must be respected at all times and called for a “peaceful transition” that protects civilians.
