12-year-old caught behind the wheel: ‘Dad had had too much to drink’

During alcohol checks in the Antwerp town of Duffel last Friday, the police caught a 12-year-old boy driving a car. His father had asked his child to drive because he had drunk too much himself. In addition to the father, the mother and two other children were also in the car. The parents admitted to the officers that they were in the wrong. The mother then took charge of the vehicle.

During alcohol checks officers noticed that a car was approaching the checkpoint very slowly and stopped about 8 metres in front of it. "Our officers quickly noticed that the driver looked very young. Upon inspection, it turned out that a 12-year-old boy was behind the wheel," said police spokesperson Leen Vereet.

The father immediately admitted that he had asked his son to drive the vehicle because he had had too much to drink. He was sitting in the passenger seat, while the mother and two other children were in the back seat.

The parents immediately admitted that they had made a mistake by letting their 12-year-old son drive. After a negative alcohol test, the mother took charge of the vehicle and drove home.

The officers issued a charge sheet that included charges of driving without a licence, entrusting a vehicle to someone without a licence, and for a disturbing parenting situation.
