140,019 disposable vapes seized this year

The Federal Health Department reports that it has seized 140,019 disposable vapes since the start of 2025. The crackdown on disposable vapes follows a ban on disposable e-cigarettes that came into force on 1 January 2025.

Health Department Inspectors say that they have seized a “significant quantity” of illegal vapes since the ban took effect. Fines for those caught selling disposable vapes can be as high as 120,000 euro. However, in practice most vendors are fined between 800 and 1,000 euro. Shops found selling disposable vapes also face temporary closure.

Since the start of the year inspectors have drafted 600 crime reports concerning the sale of disposable vapes and 18 shops have been forced to close for breaching the ban on disposable vape sales. Inspectors carried out almost 2,400 checks on night shops, newsagents, petrol stations, supermarkets and online stores. Illegal vapes were found at 680 of the retail premises inspected, more than 25% of the total.

In Brussels illegal vapes were found at 60% of the shops the inspectors visited. In Flanders this was around 1 in 5.
