On Saturday afternoon the pro-Palestinian and climate activist Wouter Mouton daubed red paint over the front of the building that houses the British Embassy in Brussels. Mr Mouton said that his actions were in protest at what he describes as ‘the atrocities committed daily by the Israel Defence Force (IDF)" and the UK government’s stance on the situation in Gaza.
The West Fleming began his one-man protest action at around noon on Saturday. The British Embassy is located on the Oudergemlaan, in the municipality of Etterbeek, just a stone’s throw away from Brussels European District.
The aim of the protest was to denounce the war crimes committed by Israel that in Mr Mouton’s view have only been possible with the “permission and support of traditional allies” that include United Kingdom.
Wouter Mouton also referred to the so-called “Filton 24”, a group of 24 British activists that have been on remand for over a year following an protest Elbit Systems in Filton, near Bristol. Elbit is an international defence and technology company that has its headquarters in Israel.
The ‘Filton 24’ are accused of aggravated burglary, vandalism and violent disorder. 8 of those currently detained have been on hunger strike since November.
