The Brussels public prosecutor's office is stepping up the fight against so-called recreational drug users: people who occasionally use drugs and buy them on the streets of the capital.
Anyone caught red-handed will have to pay a fine issued by a police officer. Fail to pay and you still face prosecution. The police can also confiscate the drug user's mobile phone or even their car if they were used while committing the offence, the public prosecutor's office confirms. Prosecutor Moinil is eager to clean up neighbourhoods where drug use and dealing is commonplace by arresting dealers and coming down hard on recreational users.
