Police officer who killed 11-year-old Fabian meets with victim's mother

The police officer, who ran down and killed Fabian, an 11-year-old boy, in a Brussels park last summer has met with the boy's mother. Daily Het Nieuwsblad broke the news that has been confirmed by Sven Mary, the officer's solicitor. ‘The conversation was very serene,’ he confirmed.

In October, it emerged that Fabian's mother wanted to meet the police officer who ran down her son. It would give her ‘peace of mind,’ she said at the time.

That meeting has now taken place. ‘The conversation lasted an hour and was very calm,’ Mary confirmed to VRT NWS. ‘We hope that some questions have been answered.’ He did not wish to say any more.

The conversation took place without magistrates or investigating judges present and is not part of the investigation. The lawyers were able to follow the conversation via video link.

Fatal collision in Brussels park

On 2 June 2024, 11-year-old Fabian was killed during a police chase in the Elisabeth Park in Ganshoren (Brussels). The boy had fled from a police check on an electric scooter. During the chase, he was hit by a police vehicle. Fabian later died in hospital as a result of his injuries.

The officer who was driving the vehicle was charged with malicious obstruction of traffic resulting in death and was also arrested by a Brussels investigating judge. He was placed under house arrest and obliged to wear an ankle tag. The court has yet to hear the case.
