Impasse in Brussels: Francophone liberals want ‘limited Brussels government’ to draw up a budget

Against the backdrop of the deadlock in the Brussels government formation, the Francophone liberals of MR are proposing the formation of a ‘limited’ government to present a budget to the Brussels regional parliament.

Until now, the MR had been opposed to this idea. ‘We rejected this option because it was not the ideal way forward, it was not the right path. I am not proposing it with much enthusiasm, but necessity breaks law. It is the responsible action. The plane needs a pilot,’ MR leader Georges-Louis Bouchez explained.

‘The fact that we will all be in the same government will create a natural solidarity and the necessary confidence to find a solution. You force people to make an effort because you have to move forward together. This also allows you to approach the rating agencies and assure them that the situation has stabilised,’ he explained.

‘I am putting forward a proposal. I would find it very strange if the largest party – the MR – were to be excluded from this. It is not about who likes who, but how we can make savings,’ said Bouchez. According to him, ‘in the Brussels political class there is a lack of a culture to implement budgetary reforms, because this has not been done in recent years’.
