‘In line with the utmost care and honesty with which I have always performed my duties, I have decided today to resign as rector of the College of Europe and as director of the European Union Diplomatic Academy,’ the Italian said in a short statement.

‘I am proud of what we have achieved together and deeply grateful for the trust, appreciation and support that the students, teachers, staff and alumni of the College and the Academy have given me and continue to give me. It has been an honour and a pleasure for me to serve the College community and its mission.’

Yesterday, it emerged that Stefano Sannino, who was also arrested and identified as a suspect, will step down as Director of the European Commission's Middle East, North Africa and Gulf Department at the end of December.

He had held that position since this year, but was previously Secretary-General of the European Union's diplomatic service (EEAS). The investigation concerns events dating back to his time at the EEAS.
