Christmas tree arrives on Brussels market square (VIDEO)

A pine from Sint-Katelijne-Waver in Antwerp Province was chosen this year to serve as the Christmas tree on Brussels’ historic market square.  The tree made its journey through the centre of Brussels on Thursday morning.

The lorry driver in charge faced quite an arduous task negotiating a route dotted with posts that today are such a feature of our urban landscape.  At times there was only a centimetre or too spare!

The pine stands 20 metres tall and weighs nearly seven tonnes.  It has to fit into a hole with a diameter of only 60cms.  The tree’s base needs to be shaved a little to allow it to fit perfectly.

The tree is now in place.  Only the lights are still missing, but they will be turned on within the week to the delight of the thousands of tourists who make for the Belgian and Flemish this Christmas.
