4.14 per cent of drivers checked during the most recent 24-hour speed marathon, when police services across the nation were mobilised to focus on speeding motorists, were found to be speeding. The figure is slightly higher than during the previous campaign in April 2025. According to the federal police, speeding is still too ingrained in the driving behaviour of the Belgian motorist.
The 23rd speed enforcement marathon took place on Thursday 13 November from 6 a.m. to 6 a.m. on Friday 14 November. For 24 hours, the Federal Police Traffic Department and police officers from 118 local police zones, carried out extra speed checks.
The results show a slight increase in the number of speeding drivers. A total of 1,145,927 drivers were checked. 47,447 vehicles were speeding, accounting for 4.14 per cent of all checks. The police revoked 102 driving licences.
During the previous edition in April 2025, 1,339,602 drivers were checked in only 24 hours. That was a record number of drivers. 3.99 per cent were found to be speeding. At that time, 98 drivers had to surrender their driving licences.
The speed enforcement marathon is organised twice a year, in spring and autumn. According to the federal police, the results prove that speeding is still ingrained in the driving behaviour of Belgians. Police therefore believe it is absolutely necessary to continue monitoring and raising awareness.
