8 people detained as part of an investigation into plot to carry out attack on Brussels Chief Prosecutor

Eight people have been detained as part of an investigation into a suspected plot to carry out an attack on the Brussels Chief Prosecutor, Julien Moinil. The judicial authorities say that "The suspects are believed to be active in an Albanian criminal network."

Early on Tuesday morning 18 properties were searched in Brussels and the Flemish Brabant city of Leuven. 8 people were detained and the examining magistrate leading the investigation will decide later today (Tuesday 18 November) whether they should be formally arrested.

In July the police received information about a plot to carry out an attack on Mr Moinil. It soon became clear that the threats were being taken seriously as the perceived threat level against the Brussels Chief Prosecutor was upscaled to level 4, which is the highest level.

In a statement the prosecutor’s office says that "The main suspects have criminal records for organised drug trafficking. They are active within the Albanian criminal underworld”.

Meanwhile, the investigation continues. “At this stage it is not possible to confirm nor deny whether there was a plot to carry out an attack on the Chief Prosecutor”, the prosecutor’s office says.
