Figures published by the federal statistics bureau Statbel reveal that almost half of all households in the Brussels-Capital Region are single-person households. Statbel published the figure to mark Singles Day that like Armistice Day takes place on 11 November.
Singles’ Day is the day on which single people the world over celebrate the fact that they are single. Singles' Day has been celebrated in China on 11 November since the 1990s.
In more recent years it has gradually become popular in Europe too. To mark Singles Day the federal statistics bureau Statbel published figures on the number of single-person households in Belgium. According to Statbel’s figures 1.8 million people in Belgium are living alone. This constitutes 36.3% of all the country’s households.
In the Brussels-Capital Region the percentage is higher still with 47.1% of all households consisting of one person. In Wallonia this is 37.7%, while Flanders has the lowest percentage of single-person households (33.4%).
It is forecast that by 2060 more than half of all households in Belgium will be single person households.
