A bus operated by the Flemish local transport company De Lijn hit a pedestrian on the Burggravenlaan in Ghent, capital of East Flanders, yesterday evening. The woman ended up under the bus and suffered life-threatening injuries. A traffic expert is now investigating how the accident happened.
Shortly after 9 p.m. last night, the emergency services received a report of the accident.
Emergency services arrived at the scene en masse. Fire fighters managed to free the woman from under the bus. She was then taken to hospital in a critical condition, police spokeswoman Eva Houpels says.
The Burggravenlaan was cordoned off for a while so that the police could size up the situation. The public prosecutor's office has appointed a traffic expert to investigate exactly how the accident could have happened.
