Mexican festival of the dead Día de Muertos celebrated in Brussels

Día de Muertos, the festival of the dead, is not only celebrated in Mexico, but also in the Marollen, a working-class district of Brussels. Until Friday, parades with traditional death masks, as well as performances, a mourning café and workshops are all being held. One of these workshops involved the making of your own offering for a deceased loved one.

Many people took part in the workshop to make an offering for a loved one who has passed away. One of the participants was Loua: "Today we are making an offering for the people and animals we miss. I made one for my mum's grandparents, because they're all dead. When it's finished, I'm going to hang it up at the big altar here at the festival of the dead."

Over 10,000 visitors expected

The Día de Muertos in the Marollen district of Brussels is becoming increasingly famous. The TAS D'OS collective, the Bruegel cultural centre and the city of Brussels work together to organise different activities every day in addition to the parades with typical death masks. Activities include concerts, performances, storytelling and much more. The festival has been celebrated in Brussels for eight years in a row now. This year, organisers expect around 14,000 visitors to this working-class district of Brussels.
