Successful hamstring surgery for Kevin De Bruyne

In the early hours of Wednesday morning, Belgian Red Devil and Napoli player Kevin De Bruyne successfully underwent hamstring surgery.  The operation took place at the AZ Monica Hospital in Deurne (Antwerp). Leading physiotherapist Lieven Maesschalck went to check on his protégé, who is doing “great”. The procedure also went according to plan. “Starting tomorrow, we will discuss the further course of his rehabilitation,” Maesschalck shared in a brief update.

Lieven Maesschalck leaves AZ Monica with a smile on his face. The top physiotherapist has just checked on Belgian national squad player Kevin De Bruyne, who entrusted the surgery on his hamstring injury to surgeon Geert Declercq.

This is no coincidence.  Many of his colleagues preceded De Bruyne at this surgeon. From Axel Witsel to Michael Ballack, they all chose the expertise and discretion of the Belgian, who in turn learned from Marc Martens, the former leading Belgian sports surgeon.

“Everything went according to plan,” Lieven Maesschalck reassures everyone.

The physiotherapist, too, has tons of experience with rehabilitation of top athletes and sees positive signs in De Bruyne.

“Kevin is doing great. Of course, the doctors here have tons of experience.”

De Bruyne will rest today, then sit down with his top physiotherapist.

“Starting tomorrow, we will discuss the further course of his rehabilitation. The goal is for him to again become the best version of himself.”

Maesschalck is not yet sharing the exact details of the plan. However, it is clear that De Bruyne’s team is doing everything it can to get him back on his feet as quickly as possible.

“Kevin will continue the first phase of his rehabilitation in Belgium,” his club Napoli announced on Wednesday.
