Around 60 people from the hospitality industry took part in the Grand Waiters’ Race on Antwerp’s market square on Sunday. They had to complete an obstacle course carrying a full tray. The event attracted a large crowd of spectators.
‘For some time now the race has been held in other cities including Paris and Leuven,’ says organiser Dennis Valerius, who also works in the hospitality industry. With true Antwerp humility he continues: ‘If Leuven can do it, I should have throught we could do it better!’
During the Grand Waiters’ Race, around 60 participants first have to pour three perfect Bollekes or glasses of Antwerp Pale Ale as well as a glass of Duvel. Then with a full tray they complete an obstacle course. For every drop spilled, a penalty second is added.
Leslie Casteleins from Brasserie Biblo (Kapellen) won the Grand Waiters’ Race, her colleague Joppe De Beule from the same brasserie landed silver. Bronze went to Michael Siereveld from the Cella (Antwerp). The proceeds from the competition will go to the VRT fundraiser De Warmste Week.
