The stabbing took place at around 10:30pm on Thursday. The victim was stabbed several times. Wouter Bruyns of the Antwerp Local Police Service told VRT News that "They both knew each other. They are people that live in the same area”.

"The Jewish community’s medical service intervened straight away and provided first aid awaiting an ambulance. The victim was then taken to hospital for treatment on what are serious injuries. His condition is not life-threatening”.

Suspect in custody

The 33-year-old suspect was restrained at the scene with the assistance of passers-by. "He is currently in a police cell. The prosecutor’s office will decide whether he should appear before an examining magistrate”, Mr Bruyns said.

The victim is not Jewish, and the police say that the stabbing is in no way linked to the conflict in the Middle East.
