At Brussels Airport in Zaventem (Flemish Brabant) the departure hall looks empty and the boards show the cancellations.

Belgian flag carrier and Sabena-successor Brussels Airlines plans to operate around 40 flights today, according to spokesperson Nico Cardone.

‘Some flights can depart from Brussels with passengers. The passengers are people arriving in Belgium on long-haul flights who don't have to go through security to transfer to another European flight. The rest are flights to Brussels, which we are still able to operate.’

Half of the arriving flights at Brussels Airport have also been cancelled.

Passengers are urged to check the status of their flight and only present at the airport if it is still running.
