The policy statement or State of the Union address by Prime Minister Bart De Wever (Flemish nationalist N-VA) has been postponed by up to one week. According to the original plan, the Belgian leader was to deliver his speech about the government's plans for the next year on Tuesday, but the speech has now been postponed because the 5-way federal government has so far failed to finalise next year’s budget. The government wants to reduce the budget deficit and find savings or extra revenue worth 10 billion euros.

After a weekend in which Prime Minister Bart De Wever held one-to-one talks with the deputy prime ministers, each representing a different party in the coalition, the inner cabinet met this morning, but agreement on the budget was not yet forthcoming.
The inner cabinet, consisting of the prime minister and deputy ministers, is not meeting again today. Several ministers will be present in Florennes (Wallonia), where the first F-35 fighter jets are arriving. Negotiations are continuing in working groups.
