Brussels police officer arrested on suspicion of espionage for China and Russia
Earlier, Politico’s European news outlet reported that a member of the Belgian security services had been arrested for possible espionage. Until now, it was not known which service exactly was involved.
Broadcaster RTBF established that the officer is based in Brussels, more specifically in the City of Brussels-Elsene police zone. Investigators are now looking into whether the officer passed on information to China, Russia, or both, and whether the suspect was aware he or she was being manipulated.
The investigation is reportedly being conducted on two levels: by the federal public prosecutor's office and the General Inspectorate of the Police on the one hand, and internally by the local police on the other. As part of the investigation, a search was also carried out at the officer's home.
