Rail services between Tielt and Lichtervelde suspended due to collision at a level crossing
Published:
The accident happened at around 8am on Friday at the level crossing on the Sint-Amandsstraat.
An initial investigation indicates that the driver ignored the red lights at the barrier at the level crossing. No one was inside the vehicle when it was hit by the train.
The train was travelling from De Panne (West Flanders) to Antwerp and as the accident happened during the rush hour the train was quite full. Around 160 passengers were on board the train.
They were all evacuated safely. The rail company NMBS took them to their final destinations aboard buses.
