The Flemish Health and Care Department says that not everyone in Flanders that is over the age of 65 will be able to receive an enhanced flu vaccine this year. This is despite a recommendation from the High Council for Health stating that this year for the first time extra strength flu vaccines should be given to people that are 65 and older.
Not enough enhanced flu vaccines despite recommendation from the High Council for Health
As is the case each autumn those that wish to can get themselves vaccinated against flu. An extra strength vaccine is recommended for certain groups such as the over 65s, pregnant woman and those working in, health(care). This year is the first time that the High Council for Health has made such a recommendation.
The extra-strength vaccines either contain a higher dose (up to 4 times the normal dose) on the normal vaccine or an extra ingredient that makes the immune system react better.
Not enough vaccines for everyone
However, there are simply not enough extra strength vaccines to go round. Joris Moonens of the Flemish Health and Care Department says that not enough were ordered and "As a result of this the enhanced flu vaccines are being kept for specific groups of patients that will benefit from them the most. People over 65 that have an addition immune system deficiency, for example. In order to be given the enhanced flu vaccine you will need a prescription from your doctor. This isn’t necessary for the standard flu vaccines”.
“The new recommendation from the High Council for Health was only published in July and flu vaccines have to be ordered much earlier than that” the Federal Agency for Medicines and Health Products (FAGG) says. “You can't just order extra ones either.” The enhanced flu vaccines also cost more.
The Flemish Health and Care Department and the Federal Health Ministry both stress that standard flu vaccines offer sufficient protect, also for those aged 65 and older.
