Rush hour misery on the Antwerp Orbital on Wednesday morning

Motorists driving on the motorway network in and around Antwerp suffered delays of up to 2 hours on Wednesday morning due to long tailbacks that had been caused by an accident involving 2 lorries and a van. The jams were worst for those heading west from Antwerp, although traffic heading east towards Antwerp also suffered delays, albeit less severe.

By 9am the situation had eased considerably with delays of only around 15 minutes for those heading towards the Kennedy Tunnel from the east.

With many commuters having sought alternative routes it was busier than normal on the A12 motorway between Antwerp North and Hoevenen and on the Krijgsbaan between Wommelgem and Mortsel.

Second accident

At around 5.30 am on Wednesday, two lorries and a van collided, completely blocking the Kennedy Tunnel. Liquid started to leak from one of the vehicles during the collision.

The Fire Service had difficulty reaching the scene to clear the liquid and the debris. The tunnel reopened as soon as this had been done. The right-hand lane remained closed to allow the debris and damaged vehicles to be hoisted onto tow trucks and taken away.

Shortly afterwards, a lorry and a car were involved in a second accident in the traffic jam that had formed due to accident as a result of the first accident.
