The company that manages the country’s busiest airport, Brussels Airport at Zaventem (Flemish Brabant), has said that all departures will be cancelled on Tuesday 14 October due to a National Day of Action by the trade unions. Brussels Airport also told the press agency Belga that some incoming flights will be cancelled too.
On Tuesday 14 October another national strike is planned in protest at the government’s reforms. A large proportion of staff that work for the security company G4S have indicated that they will join the action. G4S security staff are responsible for many security duties at the airport.
In a statement Brussels Airport says that “unfortunately this will have a big impact on activities at the airport”. All departing flights have been cancelled and there will also be disruption to incoming flights. How badly they will be impacted is not yet clear.
The airlines will inform the passengers about the cancellations and about their options regarding alternative travel arrangements. Brussels Airport asks passengers not to go the airport on 14 October.
The airport says that this will be the 6th day of action so far this year. Days of action have a big impact on the airport and the airlines that operate services to and from Zaventem “the action is against the policies of and measures taken by the Federal Government. The national demonstrations have affected 250,000 passengers and cost the Belgian economy 150 million euro so far. Brussels Airport deeply regrets the impact that this national action by the trade unions is having on our passengers”.
