Inflation rises above 2 per cent once again, partly due to higher prices for domestic help and beef

Inflation in Belgium again rose above 2 per cent in September reaching 2.12 per cent, the Belgian statistics agency Statbel reports. Higher prices for domestic help and beef, among other things, had an impact.

In July and August, inflation, the rate at which the cost of living rises, stood at 1.92 and 1.91 per cent respectively.  It was the first time since January 2024 that the figure was below 2 per cent, the European Central Bank's medium-term target.

By September, though, a number of products and services had risen in price much more than 2 per cent over the past year, according to data from Statbel.

For example, domestic services are now 21.8 per cent more expensive. Beef and veal have become 16.9 per cent more expensive, tickets for sports and recreational events 15.6 per cent and the fees for sewerage and wastewater treatment 14 per cent. Coffee (+13.9 per cent), jewellery (+13.1 per cent) and chocolate (+12.7 per cent) are also among the items that have become more expensive.

On the other hand, a number of products have become considerably cheaper. Tech items, for example: televisions have fallen in price by 16.1 per cent, smartphones by 14.2 per cent and computers by 12.4 per cent. Heating oil became 11.6 per cent cheaper in one year.
