The Belgian Prime Minister called on the world leaders present at the UN General Assembly to resist “new forms of imperialism” and “new military threats”. In a direct reference to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Mr De Wever said that Belgium would fulfil its responsibilities by increasing investment in defence and deepening the integration of the Belgian armed forces and the defence industry with our European partners.

Mr De Wever also called for greater cooperation across borders to tackle international organised crime. He also issued a strong rebuff of protectionism and said that "Free and fair trade is the way forward. We must cherish and defend it. We must break down trade barriers."

His speech comes at a time when the authority of international organisations, respect for sovereignty and adherence to international law are increasingly being put under pressure.

In an interview with Belgian journalists following his speech, Mr De Wever said that had sharpened his tone in response to the US President Donald Trump’s criticism of the UN and Europe earlier this week.

Europe must take responsibility

However, the Belgian Prime Minister stresses that Europe must take responsibility. “It can become a national hobby to complain about Trump’s America, but I don’t see much point in that. Europe has homework to do: strengthen its defence, remove trade barriers within the single market and conclude free trade agreements with other regions of the world that still have appetite to do so.”

Mr De Wever added that during his stay in New York he has observed that many countries reject President Trump’s vision of the world order and remain supportive of multilateralism. “If you feel that the UN is incapable of fulfilling its function, then you can do two things: either completely can burn it down or you can work to improve it".
