Vast majority of flights to and from Brussels Airport are operating following Friday’s cyberattack

Although the disruption caused by Friday's cyberattack at Brussels Airport is still being felt today (Monday), the airport says that vast majority of flights are operating as normal. Sixty-three flights to or from Brussels Airport have been cancelled today and the average delay for passengers wishing to check-in is around half an hour.

As has been the case at several other European airports, such as London Heathrow and Berlin, Brussels Airport has been experiencing technical issues with check-in and boarding systems since Friday evening. The issues are the result of a cyberattack against the service provider Collins Aerospace. Since Friday evening, many passengers have had to be checked in manually, using hand-written boarding passes. Inevitably this has caused severe delays.

Brussels Airport says that the vast majority of flights are operating as normal. Of the 277 flights due to leave Zaventem today, 40 have been cancelled. The same is true of 23 of the 277 flights due to arrive at the airport.

Brussels Airport’s spokeswoman Ihsane Chioua Lekhli told VRT news that on Monday staff at check-in desks are using both pen and paper and laptops and tablets to ensure that passengers can check-in for flights. It is also possible to check-in online, and passengers can print their own baggage labels by using machines that are available at the airport.

It is not yet known when operations at Brussels Airport will fully return to normal.
