The Federal Aviation Ombudsman Philippe Touwaide has presented a 30-point plan to address the issue of noise nuisance from aircraft taking off and landing at Brussels Airport in Zaventem (Flemish Brabant).
Federal Aviation Ombudsman presents plan to address noise nuisance from Brussels Airport
The document points out that the Federal Government is responsible for managing the airport, while the regions are responsible for setting standards to combat noise pollution.
The plan contains various measures that have been advocated for some time, including the strict application of all court rulings and legislation regarding noise levels and environment permits.
In addition to this, some of the measures contained in the plan that was presented on Wednesday relate to technical procedures, including the take-off speed and the engine power of aircraft.
The Federal Aviation Ombudsman advocates the use of runways 25R and 25L at the start and the end of the night. He says that planes should land on runway 25R that is closest to the airport’s cargo terminals and take-off from runway 25L. Mr Touwaide says that night flights using certain types of aircraft should be cancelled or at the very least restricted.
The Federal Aviation Ombudsman also calls for at a reduction of so-called “quota counts” (QC), the maximum noise level for each aircraft taking off and landing. In addition, he calls for consideration to be given to improving flight routes, as most date back to 1972.
