Drier and warmer weather on the way

It’s time to put your umbrella away as the weather is set to become drier, warmer and sunnier again. From Thursday, we will enjoy maximum temperatures of up to 25°C and it will be even warmer on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Published:

Thursday will start off with clear skies over a wide area of the country. This will be reflected by a rise in temperatures. On Thursday temperatures in central areas of the country will reach 25°C.

On Friday temperatures will top 27°C with a top temperature of 28°C in central areas forecast for Saturday.

The Royal Meteorological Institute (KMI) says that it will be quite a bit cooler on Sunday with temperatures reaching no higher than 20°C. There is also a chance of rain.

Next Monday will be cloudy with a chance showers or more prolonged periods of rain. It will be cooler with temperatures reaching no higher than 17°C.

Astronomical summer not over yet

Does the forecast of temperatures in the mid-20s mean that we will be enjoying a so-called “Indian summer” later this week. The VRT’s weatherwoman Jacotte Brocken say that this will not be the case as we can only speak of an “Indian Summer” if there is a period of warm, dry weather after the end of the astronomical summer.

As the astronomical summer doesn’t end until Monday 22 September (at 8.19 p.m. to be precise), the fine weather this week will not be an example of an “Indian summer” or a “late summer” as meteorologist prefer to call it.

Astronomical seasons are based on the position of the Earth relative to the Sun. The seasonal differences are caused by the tilt of the Earth's axis. The astronomical autumn begins when day and night are of equal length. This year, that is on 22 September.
