Federal police caught nearly 8,500 people driving under the influence of alcohol this summer, but the percentage of instances continues to fall
This summer federal police carried out spot alcohol checks on more than 500,000 drivers in Belgium, a record number. The results are good news: The percentage of people driving under the influence was 1.6%, a sharp decline on last year.
The percentage shows a continuing trend, with 2.1% testing positive in the summer of 2024, and 2.3% testing positive in 2023. “The majority of the population have gotten the message of the BOB campaigns and have changed their behaviour,” said the federal police in a statement.
The latest campaign took place from 6 June to 1 September, when 8,475 people were caught driving under the influence of alcohol. The campaign also tested for drugs, and just under 1,500 people tested positive.
“A minority is still ignoring the message,” said the federal police. “These drivers are not only endangering themselves but also other road users. So we will continue with these campaigns.”
