The telecoms company Orange Belgium has fallen victim to hackers. The hackers gained access to 850,000 customer accounts. Orange announced that its customer database had been hacked in a press release on Wednesday morning. The company is keen to stress that no passwords, email addresses or financial details have been leaked.
At the end of July Orange Belgium discovered a cyber attack on its IT system. During the attack “unauthorised access was gained to certain data contained in 850,000 customer accounts”.
However, the telecoms company stresses that "no critical data” such as passwords, email addresses or bank account and financial details were obtained by the hackers. Orange does concede that the hackers did gain access to its customers’ names, telephone numbers, sim card numbers, PUK codes and their tariff plans.
Orange Belgium has informed the relevant authorities and lodged a complaint with the Prosecutor’s Office. The customers whose data has been leeked will be informed by email or text message. “We will advise them to be on their guard for suspicious calls or messages”.
