2024 was a year of strong growth for the Flemish gaming industry

According to figures released by the industry federation Flega, the Flemish gaming industry saw turnover grow by 20% to 70 million euro in 2024. The rise in turnover is due to the release of several new games such as Baldur’s Gate III (photo above) that have proved popular among gamers.

In addition to a big rise in turnover, employment in the gaming industry in our region also rose by 20%. At the end of last year, the Flemish gaming industry accounted for the equivalent of 674 full-time jobs. Meanwhile, the number of companies involved in the development of computer games in Flanders rose from 113 to 128.

Flega’s General Manager Natascha Rommens said that the growth in the gaming industry in Flanders is good for the region as a whole

"Export accounts for 99% of the market for Flemish game developers and as such it strengthens the region’s position on the world stage".

Nevertheless, devolping video games is a "risky business” and "The challenge for the government lies in creating a favourable fiscal climate that can ensure a strong, sustainable industry in Flanders."

Once again, the industry federation is calling for the creation of a "favourable fiscal climate" in order to support further growth in the Flemish gaming industry in order to "put Flanders on the map as an important player".

The Flemish gaming industry is well-represent at this year’s Gamescom trade fair in the German city of Cologne. A record 28 Flemish companies are represented at this year’s fair. The Flemish Media Minister Cieltje Van Achter (nationalist) is also attending.

Gamescom gets underway today and runs until Sunday 24 August.
