New traffic plan for redevelopment of Brussels’ Schuman Square set to take effect

Drivers passing through Brussels’ Schumanplein will have to follow a new traffic plan from 28 August. Although the diversion is necessary for the new phase of the redevelopment of the area, it will remain in place after construction is completed.

Motorists will only be able to connect between the neighbourhoods north and south of the square via Blijde Inkomstlaan. This has already been converted into a two-way cycle street. Drivers coming from Kortenberglaan and the E40 will be diverted via Archimedesstraat and Wetstraat.

Oudergemlaan and Froissartstraat, which also lead to the square, will become dead-end streets.

The intended result of the works is a car-free square. The designers want to focus on greenery, active mobility and concentric circles that draw the eye to the centre. A large dome will form the centrepiece of the square.

According to Beliris, the Brussels agency in charge of the project, the redevelopment was initially expected to cost €25 million. However, in the absence of a Brussels government since last June’s election, financing is contentious. Brussels asked the European Commission for money for the project in June, as their buildings are on the square.

At the same time, the city wrote to the European Parliament, the European Council, the European Committee of the Regions and European Foreign Affairs Chief Kaja Kallas for a “joint financial contribution”. The European Union has already provided €17.4 million in loans.

The work is expected to last until the end of 2026.
