Almost three-quarters of Flemings believe that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza

A survey by the opinion pollsters Ipos that was commissioned by the daily ‘Het Nieuwsblad’ has found that almost three-quarters of Flemings believe that Isreal is committing war crimes and genocide in Gaza. One-third of those surveyed also hold Hamas responsible for the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip. 1,000 people in Flanders took part in the Ipos survey that was conducted between 1 and 4 August.

7 out of 10 of those surveyed blame Isreal for famine in Gaza. Of these 38% say that Hamas is also partially responsible. Just under half of the respondents believe that Hamas alone is to blame, while 42% of those surveyed said that Israel bears full responsibility.

Just 5% said that Israel is not at all to blame for the situation in Gaza.

Sanctions

A sizable majority (73%) say that Belgium’s federal government should impose sanctions on Israel. 47% say that these should be in the form of economic and financial sanctions. 43% of those surveyed are in favour of a ban on all forms of military cooperation with Israel.

Meanwhile, 55% of those surveyed say that the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu should be arrested and handed over to the International Criminal Court in The Hague if he were to come to Belgium.

60% of the Flemings that took part in the survey said that they support the recognition of a Palestinian state. However, most would attach conditions to this such as the release of hostages and a halt to armed resistance.
