The convicted terrorist Nizar Trabelsi is on his way to Belgium from the United States. VRT NWS has learned from a reliable source that the US is extraditing Trabelsi, who was convicted of terrorist offences and sentenced to 10 years imprisonment by a Belgian court in the early 2000s. He planned an attack of the Klein-Brogel airbase in Limburg Province.
After years of legal wrangling the United States extradites terrorist Nizar Trabelsi to Belgium
Nizar Trabelsi is a Tunisian national. He was a member of the terrorist organisation Al-Qaeda. After his trial in Belgium, he was extradited to the United States, where he also stood trial.
There he spent 10 years on remand awaiting his trial, at which he was acquitted. Despite his acquittal he remained in custody for another two years.
The extradition of Nizar Trabelsi to the United States was controversial because he stood trial in the United States for the same crimes as he had already been convicted of here in Belgium.
Several court hearings in Belgium ruled that Nizar Trabelsi must be brought back to Belgium as his extradition to the United States had been illegal.
Now he is being sent back to Belgium it is unclear whether he will be able to remain here. Nazir Trabelsi is neither a Belgian citizen nor does he have a residence permit to live in Belgium.
