Dozens of organisations take action outside HQs of the Flemish socialist, Flemish Christian democrats and Francophone centrists

Around 50 civil society organisations and individual members of public headed for headquarters of the Francophone centrist, Flemish Christian democrat and Flemish socialist parties on Friday. They did so to back up their call for the three parties (that are part of the federal coalition government) to take action for Gaza.

The organisations say they are satisfied with the way in which the parties’ positions on the situation in Gaza have evolved. Bert Engelaar of the socialist trade union ABVV told VRT News that following the strong words of recent weeks “we also want to see action”.

To back up their call several dozen activists gathered at the entrance to the 3 parties respective HQ.

Those taking part in the protest say that they will stay put overnight if necessary until a clear answer is given to the two questions.

The questions are “Are the parties prepare to make a decision straight away even if it leads to a (political) crisis?” Secondly “Will a parliamentary majority with other democratic parties be sought if certain coalition parties block measures against Israel?”

The second question was already answered by the Flemish socialist leader Conner Rousseau on Thursday. Mr Engelaar says that Friday’s action “Is not an attack on the three parties. We want to encourage them and show them that they are not alone”.
