It was a busy National Day holiday weekend at the coastal resorts of West Flanders. Figures released on Tuesday by the West Flemish Tourist Board Westtoer show the during the 3-day long weekend some 300,000 day-trippers went to the coast. In addition to this there were also around 700,000 overnight stays at our coastal resort.
300,000 day-trippers and 700,000 overnight stay at our coastal resorts during the National Day holiday weekend
The busiest day at the coast was Saturday with 125,000 day-trippers flocking to coastal towns and municipalities such as De Panne, Ostend and Knokke. The figures are similar to last year when Belgium’s national day fell on a Sunday.
The Chairman of Westtoer, provincial cabinet member Jurgen Vanlerberghe (socialist) told journalists that "The summer season at the coast traditionally peaks between the weekend of 21 July and the weekend of 15 August. This coincides with the period when those working in the construction industry are usually on holiday and people in neighbouring countries are also on vacation.
“As not only Belgians appreciate the charms of our coastal resorts. They also attract visitors from neighbouring countries", Mr Vanlerberghe said.
