Tomorrowland is what the Flemish call a doorzetter. Even the complete destruction by fire of the festival’s main stage 36 hours before the doors open has not stopped organizers from forging ahead. The biggest dance festival in the world welcomed ticket-holders as of 14.00 this afternoon.

The festival in Boom, Antwerp province, is pulling out all the stops to get the new main stage – under construction since yesterday – operational by 16.00. Along with the festival-goers currently pouring through the doors, there are 38,000 people already on the site, who were allowed to access the campsite, Dreamland, yesterday.

It was not immediately known on Wednesday evening, when the monolithic main stage burnt to the ground, if the festival would even be able to continue – at least this weekend. (Tomorrowland takes place for six day over two weekends.)

But not only were the doors delayed only for a mere couple of hours, the program is continuing as scheduled, with main stage performers taking to one of the event’s 14 other stages. The new mainstage should be good to go later this afternoon. Belgian DJs Odymel and Pegassi will kick things off with a back-to-back set – reportedly at 16.00.

“Hundreds of people have been working over the last 48 hours to ensure a worthy alternative,” to the mainstage, reports Sielke Sanen of VRT live from the festival site. “It had to happen fast, but it also had to be safe. And they have managed it because inspectors have given them the approval to operate.”
