The headache of having six police zones in the capital region will be over within two years, says the federal minister of the interior
Starting in 2027, the six police zones currently established in the Brussels-Capital Region will become one, the Council of Ministers has decided. The move puts to rest long-running frustrations regarding inefficiencies and communication breakdowns among the multiple zones.
Police zones in the region have traditionally been split up by municipality, with two or more more municipalities belonging to each zone. “I think that it’s pretty obvious to everyone that a sense of safety in Brussels is problematic,” said federal interior minister Bernard Quintin (MR). “This reform will improve that because it will unify the chain of command.”
Flemish political parties in particular have been complaining about the delays and administrative headaches caused by six zones in a city the size of Brussels. “After more than 15 years of talks, we’re finally there: Brussels will get one police zone,” said Quintin. “It’s a historic step forward for better safety and more trust.”
