According to the Brussels transport company MIVB, the victim was found wedged between the shutters at one of the entrances to the Anneessens-Fontainas metro station. ‘We suspect that this individual tried to enter the station before the official opening time,’ explained MIVB spokesman Laurent Vermeersch. ‘In the process, that person presumably got stuck between the shutters, with fatal consequences.’

The emergency services were quickly on the scene but could do nothing more to save the victim.

Nothing is known about the identity of the deceased. ‘The victim’s exact circumstances also require further investigation,’ Mr Vermeersch added.

MIVB staff noticed that the man had drugs on him fuelling speculation he was under the influence of drugs when the accident occurred.

When someone under the influence of drugs tries to enter a closed metro station, things can easily turn nasty.   The station entrance gates are equipped with safety features. "In every station, there is a notice displaying at what time the shutters open and close. There are also sound and light signals the moment a shutter is set in motion."

As recently as 2023, four people became trapped in the shutters of a Brussels metro station. 1 person died as a result.

This morning the Anneessens metro station was briefly closed to the public but has since reopened.
