Barely a week after Julien Moinil was given police protection following ‘serious threats’, the threat level has been raised to the very highest: level 4.  That means the threat is considered ‘very serious’, according to the threat analysis body OCAD, which determines the threat level.

The upscaling reportedly happened last Saturday. The exact nature of the threats the prosecutor's office would not disclose. All indications are that the increased threat comes from drug traffickers.

War on drugs

Prosecutor Moinil - who has now been the Brussels public prosecutor for six months - has stepped up the fight against drugs in the capital. Just last month, for instance, a major police operation was held in the Peterbos neighbourhood of Anderlecht. This has clearly provoked the various drug gangs in the capital.

This is not the first time Mr Moinil has been threatened (and has been given special protection). Before his job as prosecutor in Brussels, he worked at the federal public prosecutor's office in the fight against organised crime. Even then, he was placed under protection at least twice.
