Tenants in Geel (Antwerp Province), left a property like a dump when they moved our recently. The landlzdy is in shock. "It’s like a tornado has swept through our house. It’s sheer horror" she told VRT.
When landlady Anja Maes entered the house, which she has been renting out to a couple in their fifties for more than 10 years, on Saturday, she got the shock of her life. She encountered what she could only describe as a rubbish dump.
"It was as if the occupants had tipped out all their drawers in all the rooms of the house. All the floors were piled full of rubbish. Broken stuff, plastic sheeting, mattresses, seats, you name it," says Anja.
"The toilet and shower, which we had had installed not that long ago, were completely smashed. The front door was also smashed. Fortunately, the windows are only dirty because they were never cleaned."
‘When we came in here on Saturday, the smell was so unbearable, but we left all the windows and doors open, so fortunately it is slowly getting better.’
The garden too is a tip. "It’s 10 by 4 metres and we found debris 3 metres high. Broken furniture, mattresses, food leftovers, pizza boxes, resulting in a rat infestation, which of course is also very annoying for the neighbours," says Anja.
An estimate for the cost of cleaning up the property came to 8,000 euros, excluding VAT, says Anja, pictured below with her partner. Fortunately, the landlady will be able to recoup the costs.
