Belgium’s favourite hip-hop artist has revamped Anderlecht FC’s anthem as only he can do and designed four jerseys for the new season to boot
“Est-ce que j’ai pas raison? Oui tu as raison. Anderlecht, Anderlecht, Anderlecht champion. Allez, allez, allez, allez! We are the champions, we are the champions!”
While they might not have been the Belgian champions since 2017, that does not stop supporters of the purple-and-white from chanting the club’s theme at every goal. The late Belgian crooner Lange Jojo – a huge supporter of the Brussels football team – penned “Anderlecht, Champion” in 1985, and it has been beloved every since.
Forty years later, it’s time for a new beat. Anderlecht pulled no punches when choosing who to collaborate with: The one and only Stromae. The world-famous hip-hop artist retained the iconic lyrics but added his quintessential beats, bombastic brass and powerful synths.
In the video clip, Stromae himself plays a modest role, as does club legend Paul Van Himst. Anderlecht assured fans that both the original and the new version will be played in the stadium.
The clip also reveals snazzy new jerseys, also the work of Stromae. The hip-hopper designs his own clothes and runs the label Mosaert. The design was “inspired by the ’80s,” he said, not coincidentally when the original “Anderlecht, Champion” was written.
