Moped thief turns himself in after injuring 5 on pavement terrace

A member of the public who lost control of a stolen moped and drove into a crowded pavement terrace in Herentals (Antwerp Province) on Saturday night has turned himself in to the police. The Antwerp public prosecutor's office has confirmed the news. The suspect will be questioned in the course of Monday morning. Five people were injured in the incident, including a 70-year-old woman, who had to be taken to hospital in a critical condition. Her condition is now stable.

The driver of the moped had stolen the vehicle minutes earlier. According to Mayor of Herentals Jan Bertels, the suspect was driving next to crowd control barriers that fenced off the access roads to a fairground, when he lost control of the vehicle and ended up on the pavement terrace of a coffee-house.

After the accident, which left four people slightly injured and one seriously injured, the driver ran off.

On Sunday evening, he turned himself in to the police. ‘He was seriously injured and had to go to hospital to seek treatment,’ said Kristof Aerts of the Antwerp public prosecutor's office. ‘The 36-year-old driver is being questioned on Monday.’
