A body was found on Thursday morning during a search of the canal in Anderlecht, the Brussels fire brigade has confirmed. The victim ended up in the water during a fight on the quay.
“This morning, a fight broke out between four people on the Veeweydekaai in Anderlecht,” said Laura Demullier of the Brussels public prosecutor’s office. “Two people ended up in the water during the fight. One person managed to reach the other side safely.”
Shipping traffic was halted while emergency services carried out a search for the second person. "After a two-hour search, we recovered a lifeless body from the water with the help of our sonar boat," said Walter Derieuw of the Brussels fire brigade.
The three suspects involved in the fight were arrested and are being questioned. The public prosecutor’s office has called in the federal police’s technical investigation team to investigate.
