A 35-year-old Belgian police officer has been killed in France just across the border with our country. The news of the police officers’ death was first announced by the public prosecutor's office in the French town of Thionville. The officer was run over and killed while in pursuit of a suspect following a car chase. An occupant of the vehicle that had been chased was also killed.
At around 10.45pm on Tuesday several Belgian police vehicles set off in pursuit of a car with two occupants that was crossing the border into France from Belgium.
The vehicle was said to be a so called “go-fast”, a fast car used by drug smugglers to outrun the police. During the car chase, the occupants threw drugs out of their car.
The case continued until it reached the D14 road near Angevillers (Moselle). There, the vehicle that was being pursued suddenly slammed on its breaks.
One police managed to dodge the vehicle, a second police car drove into it. The 2 suspects get out and ran off the chase then continued on foot.
Hit by a car
One of the suspects crawled over the crash barrier to the other side of the dual carriageway. An officer from the Belgian Highways Police officer followed him. Both the suspect and the policeman were hit by a car coming in the opposite direction.
The car then ran them down was in no way involved in the car chase. The second suspect was arrested and has been remanded in custody.
