Tram 44 back on track from Saturday

There is good news for residents of and those that wish to travel to the Flemish Brabant municipality of Tervuren on public transport. After almost 2 years of disruption, the Brussels public transport company MIVB’s route 44 tram service will be fully operational again from Saturday 21 June. Modernisation works on the track have been completed, so from Saturday it will be possible to travel from the Montgomery metro station in Sint-Pieters Woluwe to the Tervuren Station stop opposite the Africa Museum and close to the British School of Brussels.

Since August 2023 there have been several prolonged periods during which trams have not been able run along at least part of route 44. This is now behind us and from Saturday normal service will resume. MIVB has renewed 7km of track and the overhead cables have also been renewed. Meanwhile, several tram stops have been given a make-over.

However, the modernisation of three stops - Drie Kleuren, Oudergem-Woud and Ravenstein - is not yet complete, but should be ready by the end of August.

Festive reopening

The reopening of the tram line is something of a festive occasion for the Brussels public transport company. On Saturday vintage trams will run alongside the normal trams between 1pm and 7pm. MIVB says that "Passengers will be able to (re)discover route 44 aboard the trams of yesteryear. These are showpieces of Brussels' rolling stock heritage. This will be done in collaboration with the Tram Museum”.

Much of tram 44 route is picturesque. Not only does it pass along the Tervurenlaan, an avenue with many fine buildings and the attractive Woluwe Park, but for several kilometres route 44 passes through the Sonian Forest. As such route 44 is popular with tourists.
