In an interview with VRT Radio 1’s morning news and current affairs programme ‘De ochtend’ the Belgium Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot (Francophone centrist) acknowledged the call of those that took part in Sunday afternoon’s demonstration for stronger political action Israel. Nevertheless, Mr Prévot stressed the limitations of any influence that Belgium could bring to bear.
Mr Prévot told the VRT “Yes, of course I’ve heard their message. But let’s be honest. Little Belgium alone won’t make Israel change course, this is something that must be done at a European level.”
The Belgian Foreign Minister added that there is agreement within the Federal Government on targeted sanctions against violent settlers, Hamas leaders, and two far-right Israeli ministers. “Few foreign ministers have used such strong language about genocide. We’ve sent out clear signals. However, I understand the frustration.”
Mr Prévot admits that there is still discord within the Federal Government on broader trade and political ties with Israel. Belgium’s continued dealings with Israeli defence firms and the EU’s Association Agreement with Israel remain contentious issues, not least because two coalition parties (the Flemish nationalists and the Francophone liberals) oppose further action.
“Personally, I feel strongly about Gaza. Within the government, we must keep pushing to remain one of the countries demanding sanctions.”
